Joanne Lefrak’s work at Grey Matter was completed during an artist residency at Bullseye Glass. These works use a technique of screen printing drawings and text with glass powder (instead of ink) and firing the glass in a kiln. Some of the work is silvered through a chemical process (the same process used to make mirrors). The text pieces were created in collaboration with poet Hakim Bellamy after Lefrak and Bellamy spent time in the Himalayas trekking to some of the most sacred places on Earth. In addition to showing at museums and galleries, Lefrak likes to show her work at places like Grey Matter since art should be accessible to all and found in unexpected places.
Lefrak was a recent fellow as part of the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver’s Animating Museums Creative Leadership program, funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. She was also the recipient of the City of Santa Fe Mayor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts in 2014. Please visit joannelefrak.com for more information.
